The Radical & Musical Society featuring !nVerse and Georgia Hilton presents an evening or music, poetry and songs - The Great & Terrible Tragedy of The Swing Riots: A tale of insurrection and the woes that befell the working men and women of Hampshire.

In 1830 farmhands and their families faced starvation. Under the banner of the
legendary Captain Swing they rose up to challenge landowners, church and
government, demanding a living wage. Fearing revolution the authorities met them
with brutality and suppression culminating in a show-trial in Winchester where many
men from local villages were condemned to death or transportation.
Using music, poetry and song The Radical & Musical Society recounts these
momentous events and their impact on villages throughout Hampshire. Performance will include cello, piano, Northumbrian small pipes, clarinet, flute, spoken word and appearances from William Cobbett, Wellington and Captain Swing himself.
